| People are generally curious about the names of things – products, companies, even people. Often there is interesting lore or a seminal moment that leads to the selection of a name. Not so much for Sodcutter Communications. Well, there was an actual moment involving Sodcutter principal Tim Kern and an actual Sod cutter, a horrible beast of a machine. You can read about this moment – or perhaps incident is a better word – here. It was not a seminal moment in the sense that it inspired Tim to start Sodcutter Communications; but it did eliminate sod cutting and most other landscaping-related ventures from any consideration set. That fateful day did inspire Tim to start blogging, however, and he decided to call the blog Sodcutter. So when it came time to name the business, the infinitesimally tiny bit of equity the name had acquired made it the obvious choice. BUT – and this is germane to the Sodcutter business – the name is easy to say and read, has an incisive, action-oriented sound and meaning, and looks good on the page and on the screen. Shovels and spades, hoes and hammers – there are a lot of great tools out there, but few are worthy of having even a small company named after them. Limb loppers, maybe. But not many others. And perhaps the adze. But that’s about it. |
